Accomplishments: Railroad

Objectives include: the rehabilitation and repair of damaged transportation systems focusing on the most economically critical networks.

  • Bechtel completed an evaluation of the Iraqi railroad system on June 25.

  • Work on railways is an integrated US-Iraqi effort; Bechtel contributes project management, material and parts while the Iraqi Railway Administration contributes equipment and labor.
    • This approach brings Iraqis into the rebuilding process and lowers project costs.

    • Arabic-English translation of railway specifications for earthwork, reinforced concrete, and buildings is underway.
  • USAID has approved the Bechtel job order in support of CPA’s priorities to repair 72 km of track from Umm Qasr to Shuiaba Junction, near Basrah.
    • Repairs will ensure grain shipments from the seaport to mills are not jeopardized due to faulty track.
